I have had this same problem. Thieves oil works wonderfully and naturally. It is made by Young Living. Too check it out go to: www.youngliving.com

You just add 10 drops of the thieves oil to a spray bottle (preferabally glass), then fill it up with water, and skirt away. You can use it anywhere in the home.

I hope this helps for you!

Wear a mask and gloves, use bleach and water. I would take the whole thing out and clean the area and check the air conditioner, make sure it's not in there.

First of all, get a new window and air conditioner. Mold is there before it's visible. If moisture is building up that much, you have bigger problems than ugly walls.

However, if this isn't an option, vinegar is a great natural disinfectant.

I had mold in our previous apartment around the windows all the time , I cleaned it with vinegar, and it worked pretty well. I don't like to use too much chemicals....

The vinegar or bleach usually do the trick.  I haven't ever tried the thieves oil.

However, PLEASE be careful when messing with it.  If it's truly black mold, there could be a myriad of problems.  If you have the little one, only try to clean it when he's not around.

As a biology major, and current Realtor, you need to understand that mold is a tough enemy and needs to be handled with respect.  If you really think it might be out of your league, call me.  I have a couple references to mold remediation specialists.  997-9511

Hope all goes well!  -Kerry

I agree that you need to peek further to see if the mold is something more.  But vinegar is my favorite option... it is stinky but way less toxic than bleach or other cleaners.

There is a site that I get my non-toxic home cleaner ideas from and I just love them. care2.com Here is their tips for getting rid of mold...

  • Tea Tree Treasure Nothing natural works for mold and mildew as well as this spray. I’ve used it successfully on a moldy ceiling from a leaking roof, on a musty bureau, a musty rug, and a moldy shower curtain. Tea tree oil is expensive, but a little goes a very long way. 2 teaspoons tea tree oil 2 cups water Combine in a spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Makes 2 cups Preparation Time: Under a minute Shelf Life: Indefinite Storage: Leave in the spray bottle
  • Citrus Seed Extract The advantage of using citrus seed extract instead of tea tree for killing mold is that it is odorless. 20 drops citrus seed extract 2 cups water Combine in a spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Makes 2 cups Preparation Time: A minute or so Shelf Life: Indefinite Storage: Leave in the spray bottle

Tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract are available in health food stores.

Tea Tree Oil works great to kill mold.  I have used it on brick and in my bathroom.  One teaspoon of oil to 8 ounces of water.
